Problems with Garage Door Openers
Some problems with garage door openers can be resolved easily while others require trained technicians.
Be aware garage doors can cause personal injury and even death.
Do you have power to opener?
* Check wall control and make sure it isn’t in lock/vacation mode.
* Look at wall control or safety sensors for illuminated lights.
* Check main breaker panel for tripped circuit breaker.
* Check outlets in garage for GFI protected outlet. Press test button then reset button.
* Plug a device (electric drill/lamp/electrical tester) you know works properly into the outlet to test for power.
Do you hear opener running clicking sounds?
* Check emergency/manual release and make sure it is in the proper location. Normally seen as a red pull cord.
* Drive gears may be stripped.
* May have a bad logic board, wall control, or electric motor.
Does the opener function from wall control only?
* Check the handheld transmitter or outside keyless entry batteries. Replace as necessary.
* Check for a stuck button on transmitter or keyless entry.
* Check for corroded battery terminals in transmitter or keyless entry.
* Transmitter or keyless entry may need to be reprogrammed.
* Transmitter, keyless entry, or logic board may be faulty.
Door opener will not close door?
* Check safety sensors at bottom of opening for proper alignment.
* Check for obstruction of safety beams.
* Sometimes the sun will affect safety beams. From outside of garage, shade the sensors to diagnose this problem.
* Check for object either in track or on the floor preventing closure of door.
* Visually confirm cables are on torsion system correctly and that rollers are in proper position. If not call a professional.
* Down force may need adjustment.
* Opener carriage/trolley may be jammed at powerhead. Travel control may need adjustment.
* Opener closes door and reverses immediately, travel control or force adjustment may be needed.
* Door may be binding while closing.
* The safety sensors, logic board, or wiring may be faulty.
Does opener try to lift door?
* Check for manual lock on door itself. Disengage and disable all manual locks.
* Force adjustment may be needed.
* Check for broken spring normally located above opening. (See Pic) If so call a professional.
* Door may be binding. Check for bent track.
* Check cables for proper alignment and frays. Either may cause misaligned door. If so, call a professional.
