Broken Garage Door Springs

How do you know if your garage door has a broken spring?

The picture below shows a torsion system with two springs, one on the top right and one on the top left. You can see how the spring on the right is broken.

Garage door springs have a cycle life of 10,000 cycles. (That’s a lot of opening and closing!) However, when springs break garage doors can’t open and you can’t get to the store.

Tip: Garage door springs work together, if one spring breaks the other spring needs to be replaced at the same time. While we have the whole system apart, we recommended doing the preventive care and replacing your bearings at this time especially if there is rust like we see in the second photo.

This second picture shows metal dust from a worn bearing. This dust indicates extreme barring wear and needed bearing replacing.
